HISTORY
The Wecan Food Basket started in January 1995. We were fortunate
to receive the help of Sr. Patricia Mary who had experience with
similar projects in Washington D.C. The Food Basket is based on
a Community Economic Development model.
It was our intention from the onset to keep the project
as simple as possible thereby avoiding large operating costs and focus on
spending the money on food rather than warehouses, trucks and staffing.
We pride ourselves to be a warehouse without walls.
We received start-up funding from the Edmonton Community Foundation, The Clifford E. Lee foundation
and the Muttart Foundation in decreasing amounts over three years. We became
self-sufficient in September of 1997.
We currently receive the generous support of the following funders:
The Edmonton Community Foundation
The Wild Rose Foundation
The City of Edmonton
The Robert Tegler Trust
